September is the time of year when the wildebeest herds amass across the northern Serengeti. To get there, the migration has to cross its most daunting obstacle, the Mara River. Here, the thundering herds traverse embankments and avoid the waiting Nile crocodiles before they regroup in northern Tanzania to begin their journey toward the calving grounds in southern Serengeti.
