In winter, Japan offers many spectacular wildlife photography experiences. Snow monkeys (Japanese macaques) bask in hot springs in Nagano’s snowy environs. On the northern island of Hokkaido, Red-crowned Cranes perform their elaborate courtship dances in the snow, and Stellar Sea Eagles arrive with the pack ice drifting in from the Sea of Okhotsk. Hokkaido is also home to the largest owl species, Blakiston’s Fish Owl, Whooper Swans, Sika deer, Ezo fox, and more.

Highlights

  • Photograph snow monkeys in the world-famous Jigokudani Monkey Park.
  • Red-crowned Cranes, Whooper Swans, Sika deer, and Ezo fox in Hokkaido.
  • Boat excursion from Shiretoko Peninsula for Stellar Sea Eagles on pack ice and in flight.
